If you have an open gutter system, you may be asking yourself when should I clean my gutters? It is important that you clean your gutter system at least twice a year. Depending on your home’s surroundings, you may need a gutter cleaning more than twice a year. The most common, and important times to clean your gutters are at the end of fall, and at the beginning of spring and/or summer. Here are some spring cleaning tips for your gutters.
It’s common this time a year to create a spring cleaning checklist of all the things your home needs to have done. Although you may not associate leaves or falling debris with spring as much as fall, some trees shed pollen, skin, seeds, flowers, pedals, crabapples, oak tassels etc. throughout spring. For homes that are near such trees, your gutters may need a cleaning more than twice a year, especially in spring. It is also important to remember that rain storms are very common in spring, and with that comes wind and wet flying debris.
The end of fall is an essential cleaning because of all of the leaves and/or debris that fell during fall. This time of the year is the most common for clogs and it is important to get them cleaned before winter hits. Following winter, it is important to get a cleaning and, possibly some repairs, to take care of the damage winter caused. Along with winter damage, spring also brings the possibility for maintenance.
Keeping gutters free of debris, and preventing clogs is essential to not only maintaining and extending their lifespan, but to ensuring that they are working as they should. Compromised gutters can do damage to your home, especially its foundation, siding and potentially your basement. These damages can be costly and lead to other issues like mold, or flooding.
