My brother Ken sent me a text the other night of this drawing his son Hunter did. The story that goes with the drawing is great. Ken stopped home from the office before going on an estimate. His son Hunter asked if he could go on the estimate with him, and my brother said “of course.” When they got into the truck Hunter began to ask a lot of questions. It started with the statement ” I want to work with you Dad.” and my brother Ken responded with “What kind of work do you want to do?” Hunter said “I want to hang gutters like you Dad.” Ken told him that he no longer hangs the gutters, but his role has changed into more sales and other business owner duties. After telling Hunter this, Hunter said “Well, I want to be a business owner too, and I want to start learning how to do that when I’m 12. We are not sure why the age of 12, but when you’re 8 years old that probably seems like forever.
By this time Hunter and Ken arrived to the estimate. Ken left Hunter in the car (don’t worry, I’m sure he cracked a window) while he met with the homeowner. When Ken got done with the estimate and returned to the car Hunter handed him a drawing on the back of a Subway napkin. To Ken’s amazement it was a picture of his Uncle Ryan, Hunter and Ken on the side of a truck. At the top of the drawing it says, “some day we will work together when I get bigger.” I think we are all standing in a gutter filled with water and by the looks of the wind streaks behind the truck, we are speeding down the highway.
This was really touching for me and my brother and made us feel really good about the business we are running and how we are doing as role models to our family. This picture is proudly hanging in our office for everyone to see.
