What is a fascia board? At times known as soffit board, fascia is a panel that runs horizontally beneath a roof’s edge. It covers the openings between the roof’s rafters. Generally made up of wood, a wood substitute, or metal, along with the soffit, the fascia board encloses the attic space of the residence. The fascia usually aids to support and solidify gutters.
Many contemporary homes currently have fascia. Older Colonial or Victorian homes, on the other hand, will not have fascia boards due to their elaborate rafter tails. Because it was thought that the huge roof overhangs produced by these elaborate rafter tails were sufficient to repel water far enough from the home’s foundation, these older structures were first built without fascia. Although it’s a common misconception, this isn’t always the case. Water may still manage to get back into your house’s foundation. Additionally, this water may harm siding, paint, windows, and doors.
It is advised that you fix any fascia that is harmed, rotten, or completely missing from your property. The Brothers that just do Gutters can either entirely replace the fascia or fix it with an aluminum fascia wrap, which is available in various sizes.
Without initially removing the gutter, it is frequently difficult to determine whether the fascia is rotten or not. However, there is a high likelihood of rotten fascia if water has been present between the fascia and gutter for some time. A gutter system built to handle the significant snow accumulations will not have the support it needs to perform correctly if the fascia board underneath is rotted.
Soffit is a layer of wood, vinyl or aluminum which stretches from the underside of the fascia to the top component of your wall board. These elements serve to shield the rafters from weather, dampness and allow air to travel through soffits and vents. Air circulation is essential in a sealed attic space to maintain even temperatures. If your home’s soffit needs to be replaced or does not yet have one, we can set it up for you. We now provide and install perforated vinyl soffit.
In circumstances where a residence doesn’t have a fascia and fitting one is not feasible, The Brothers that just do Gutters are able to add a gutter without the fascia by deploying roof straps. The roof straps join to the hidden hanger within the gutter and attach directly onto the roof. If the roof is aged, it is not recommended to lift up the shingles to insert the strap. This could damage or fracture shingles. Most often, the roof strap has to be secured over the shingles. Installing a gutter system using this method is powerful, but not as robust as installing with fascia. Also, roof hangers aren’t as pleasing in appearance. If your house has slate, tile or cedar shingle on its rooftop, it’s highly advised that you don’t employ the roof strap technique.
• Fascia provides a layer of strength to help stabilize the gutter.
• Fascia allows a place for the soffit to attach and close off the attic space
• Soffit is vented which prevents winter ice, water from entering the home, and keeps the home cooler in the summer months.
• Open rafter without fascia get screwed into the end grain of the available wood. It is not as strong as screwing it into the perpendicular wood of the fascia board (more strength and stability when you are able to screw into grains of wood that run horizontally).
• Open rafters with no fascia often allow for insects and animals to find their way into your home.
Another option for homes that currently do not have fascia and/or installation is not possible, is to build out the overhang. Then install fascia on this extended overhang, which we’d then install the gutters on.
