Have you wondered how to install gutters, particularly seamless half-round gutters? There are a lot of things to consider. It takes proper mathematics to come up with the right gutter bracket spacing on a half-round or radius installation.
When installing gutters, it is important to determine the pitch of the gutter first. This can be done by using a line secured on one end with a nail or screw, where the highest point of the gutter will be. The other end of the line is then made tight where the gutter will end to determine whether the line is level. Leaving this line up for the entire process of installing the brackets can be helpful.
In addition, a general rule of thumb for installing half-round gutter brackets is shown below:
*These measurements should be used only as a guideline. Hangers will likely never be spaced exactly 24” as it will always be based on exact measurements determined on site.
In some cases where there may be issues like slanted fascia, different kinds of hangers can be used to accommodate this.
A seamless gutter is fabricated on site using a gutter forming machine. The gutter machine bends and forms a roll of copper (or other gutter material) into a seamless rain gutter. Every seamless gutter is measured to custom fit the area where the gutter will be installed.
Before hanging the gutters, you will need to cut holes for your downspouts. Make sure to measure from the end of the roof to the point directly above where you plan to attach each downspout and then use those measurements to accurately cut your holes.
When it is time to hang the seamless half-round gutter, set the gutter into place on the brackets and hook the back edge to the bracket. Then hold down the front edge using spring hooks.
When installing copper gutters, soldering is used as a sealant for end caps, elbows and joints instead of caulk.
Lastly, it is time to install the downspouts. The cleats to hold the brackets up are soldered onto the back of the downspout and these are screwed into the wood of the home.
