What is Fascia Board
A fascia board, also known as a soffit board, is a flat board that runs horizontally along the roof edge and covers the gaps between the rafters of the roof. It is usually made of wood, metal, or a substitute material, and is accompanied by a soffit board to enclose the attic area of a house. In addition to providing stability to gutters, the fascia also serves the purpose of supporting them.
What is the difference between fascia and soffit?
Fascia
Fascia is a horizontal board that can be found in many modern homes, but it’s typically absent in older Colonial or Victorian homes with decorative rafter tails. This is because architects believed that the large roof overhangs created by the rafter tails were sufficient to keep water away from the foundation of the home. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case, and water can still seep into the foundation of the home, causing damage to siding, paint, windows, and doors.

Detecting rotted fascia can be challenging, and often requires removing the gutter itself. However, if water has been running between the fascia and gutter for an extended period, there’s a high probability that the fascia is rotted. Rotted fascia cannot properly support a gutter system that is designed to withstand heavy snow accumulations. Therefore, it’s important to have your fascia inspected regularly to ensure that it’s in good condition and can support your gutter system. Soffit
Soffit refers to the layer made of wood, vinyl, or aluminum which stretches from the underside of the fascia to the top part of your wallboard, shielding the rafters from weather and moisture while enabling air to flow through the soffits and vents. However, it is not advisable to lift up the shingles to insert the strap if the roof is old as it can harm or break shingles. In most situations, the roof strap must be secured on top of the shingles. This installation method is not as sturdy as installing with a fascia, and roof hangers are less visually appealing. It is not recommended to use the roof strap technique for homes with slate, tile, or cedar shingle roofs.
Here are some reasons why having a fascia board (in good condition) is the best option:
• Fascia provides a layer of strength to help stabilize the gutter.
• Fascia allows a place for the soffit to attach and close off the attic space
• Soffit is vented which prevents winter ice, water from entering the home, and keeps the home cooler in the summer months.
• Open rafter without fascia get screwed into the end grain of the available wood. It is not as strong as screwing it into the perpendicular wood of the fascia board (more strength and stability when you are able to screw into grains of wood that run horizontally).
• Open rafters with no fascia often allow for insects and animals to find their way into your home.
For houses that lack fascia or cannot have it installed, an alternative is to extend the overhang and install fascia on it. The gutters can then be mounted on this extended overhang.
