My professional career began in 2015 when I started working as an apprentice gutter installer at The Brothers That Just Do Gutters headquarters in NY. At the time, I was in college with no real direction.
Now, six years later, I have worked my way up the skills ladder from apprentice to team leader. I had a hand in its franchising throughout my time working at the company and continued to pursue an education in business, obtaining a BA in Economics and Business from the University at Albany in 2019.
Pursuing a career in business is something that has intrigued me since I was a child. For a long time, I didn’t believe I was creative enough for business ownership and doubted my professional abilities. It wasn’t until I truly started to understand the franchising concept that a light bulb went off in my head, and I realized how perfectly it solved my concerns. Not only did the franchise model work as a proven business system, but there is also no guesswork. The evidence of this system working is right in front of me.
The support from other franchisees within the network is an added layer of reassurance. All these people are more than willing to take calls for advice. Franchising to me is perfect because, as I like to say, it is “working for yourself, not by yourself”.
I was particularly drawn to the gutter franchise because it is a product that is essential to every home. It’s rewarding to know that I provide a service that will help protect their most important asset. Additionally, working at The Brothers That Just Do Gutters franchise, I know that I am providing a high-quality service unmatched by its competitors. The Brothers Gutters franchise specifically offers customers the value that they deserve. The franchise is run by local workers and has a reputation for training employees properly and doing things right the first time.
I have 6 years’ experience installing gutters, but I am excited to transition into an ownership role. Once I established this is what I was striving for, I developed a habit of looking at each situation and asking myself what I would do if it were my franchise. Getting into that mindset was valuable, and it speaks volumes to how The Brothers Gutters system can develop employees into leaders and help them reach their goals.
I most look forward to implementing the skills ladder. As someone who has climbed the skills ladder, it excites me to provide those opportunities to local employees. Because the system was something that changed my life for the better, I want to offer the same opportunities to the skilled workforce of Charleston.
One year on, I see Charleston Brothers Gutters adding a 3rd truck to our fleet and establishing ourselves in the community as the “go-to” gutter company. I also see us putting our employees into new positions, providing more opportunities for them and their families and hiring new employees.
In Charleston, there are many different homes styles, and we have products and solutions to fit all of them. I think one significant enhancement the houses in the area could use is 6-inch sized gutters. The Charleston area will especially benefit from increased gutter sizes where rain is frequent, and when there are rainstorms, they are often heavy in rainfall. The right size gutters are needed to handle all of that water.
The thing that sets The Brothers That Just Do Gutters apart is the value we provide our customers. Our ethos is “Reinventing contactor service” because we are not only providing a great product, but we are also providing the best customer service available. From the first phone call, we communicate the whole process by sending email and text updates to let you know when your Solutionist will arrive, who the Solutionist will be, and when the installation crew will come. Our installers are given thorough training on installation and safety, and we have weekly safety meetings that are compliant with the state safety standards. After your installation, you will receive follow up calls and emails, ensuring all of your expectations were met. Overall, The Brothers That Just Do Gutters offers the whole package.
In 1999 Ken Parsons had just left the teaching industry and started his own gutter contractor company under the name Waterfall Seamless Gutters. In 2002 Ken’s younger brother, Ryan Parsons, accepted a job on the truck with Ken after the Graphic Design company he was working for crashed. In 2006 the Brothers briefly changed their name to Water-flow Gutter Solutions before finally becoming “The Brothers that just do Gutters” in 2009. The name we all know and love came from a radio ad the Brothers ran just a couple years prior to the change. Everyone who heard it liked it so much they thought it was the company name so Ken and Ryan stopped fighting it and adopted the name. With the name change came a few title changes as well. We decided we no longer wanted to be salesman, presidents or owners but rather Solutionists©, which embodied what we represent to our clients. Ken Parsons was re-entitled Senior Solutionist©, and Ryan Parsons became Chief Solutionist©.
Being in the gutter contractor business for over 15 years was an effort of adaptation and determination. We have been able to be successful for so long because we made our main focus the customer. The Brothers that just do Gutters offer a wide variety of installations, cleaning and repairs in a small niche industry of seamless rain gutters and leaf guards. We have been able to grow the reliability of our services and offer only the best products by focusing all our effort on gutter systems and guards.
Our mantra, “Reinventing Contractor Service™” is the phrase we live by in all areas of our business, every day. The story of The Brothers that just do Gutters began with hard work and a dream to be a community-loved contractor. We wanted to reinvent how clients experience contractor services and provide a level of customer service and reliability that was lacking in our industry.
Along the way, we had to learn to move at the speed of business and invent many new methods never before implemented in the contractor field. Meeting our goal of being a five-star contractor and reinventing contractor service meant focusing on every detail of the job. By creating a unique experience with the homeowner, investing in our employees, sourcing the best products, and creating training methods for publishing every review a homeowner made on our independent review services, we started to rise above the rest.
