Matt and Kaytie Smith met in Columbus, GA in 2007, where Kaytie was a master cosmetologist at a salon, and Matt was a police officer.
In 2008, they married and soon moved to the Birmingham, AL area, where they still reside with their two children. Kaytie worked as a hairstylist for 6 years, before deciding to stay home and raise their family. Matt continued policing as a Shelby County Sheriff’s deputy until 2021. After 18 years in law enforcement, and a horrific motorcycle accident that left Matt a below-the-knee amputee, they knew it was time for a change. Matt returned to full duty for 3 years before deciding to retire from the Sheriff’s Office.
Matt and Kaytie always talked about owning their own business –to be their own boss, to be able to take off work when needed, to be able to go to their kids’ school plays or games, to be able to travel… but they didn’t know where or how to start. Matt’s younger brother, Luke Smith, started a Brothers Gutters Franchise in Columbus Ga, which then birthed the idea to start one in Birmingham. After seeing how much Luke loved it, his success, and the family that is The Brothers Gutters Corp, it was a no-brainer.
Kaytie’s grandpa used to say that if you work for yourself, and choose a business that people will always need, you will always have work. We knew that Gutters will always be needed.
We get a lot of rain here. So, I think many of the homes in the area could benefit from 6” gutters, instead of the 5” that are on most homes. We also plan on offering stainless steel gutters or copper gutters… they look beautiful and will stand out because a lot of people don’t have those here. They will help resale, and be an upgrade to any home, leaving neighbors envious!
With The Brother that just do Gutters franchise, we feel like we are set for success. It’s like having an older sibling helping you navigate through life…“do this, not that” or “don’t do that, do this”. We have full confidence in the franchise system. They are our business family, helping us and pushing us forward, every step of the way.
It is super exciting to transition from our current roles to becoming business owners, but it can also be super overwhelming. We have so many more responsibilities, but also, so many more possibilities. We just focus on accomplishing one task at a time.
I am passionate about providing local jobs for people in the area and becoming a leader of an amazing team. Our one-year goal is to have 4 trucks with $1.5 million in revenue so that we could consider adding a fifth truck. We are excited to build our team and to create a family-oriented atmosphere that is designed to help everyone succeed, not just in work, but in life.
We clean gutters, and we install gutters and gutter guards… but we do so much more than that. We develop a relationship with our clients. Communication is key. We educate our clients. We discuss the work we are doing before doing it and make sure we are on the same page as our clients. We will strive to provide the best experience they’ve had with any home improvement company, and leave them wishing we did more than just gutters!
One of the reasons we are excited about The Brothers that just do Gutters franchise is that they have a support team and technology that will help us provide the five-star service that our customers deserve. We are professional. We respect our clients’ time. We will show up on time, and if we are running late, we will call our clients and let them know and let them know when to expect us. We will be friendly. We will do an amazing job. We will clean up afterward and leave your home looking better than we found it. You can count on loving your experience with us, and being proud of the decision you made to hire us.
In 1999 Ken Parsons had just left the teaching industry and started his own gutter contractor company under the name Waterfall Seamless Gutters. In 2002 Ken’s younger brother, Ryan Parsons, accepted a job on the truck with Ken after the Graphic Design company he was working for crashed. In 2006 the Brothers briefly changed their name to Water-flow Gutter Solutions before finally becoming “The Brothers that just do Gutters” in 2009. The name we all know and love came from a radio ad the Brothers ran just a couple years prior to the change. Everyone who heard it liked it so much they thought it was the company name so Ken and Ryan stopped fighting it and adopted the name. With the name change came a few title changes as well. We decided we no longer wanted to be salesman, presidents or owners but rather Solutionists©, which embodied what we represent to our clients. Ken Parsons was re-entitled Senior Solutionist©, and Ryan Parsons became Chief Solutionist©.
Being in the gutter contractor business for over 15 years was an effort of adaptation and determination. We have been able to be successful for so long because we made our main focus the customer. The Brothers that just do Gutters offer a wide variety of installations, cleaning and repairs in a small niche industry of seamless rain gutters and leaf guards. We have been able to grow the reliability of our services and offer only the best products by focusing all our effort on gutter systems and guards.
Our mantra, “Reinventing Contractor Service™” is the phrase we live by in all areas of our business, every day. The story of The Brothers that just do Gutters began with hard work and a dream to be a community-loved contractor. We wanted to reinvent how clients experience contractor services and provide a level of customer service and reliability that was lacking in our industry.
Along the way, we had to learn to move at the speed of business and invent many new methods never before implemented in the contractor field. Meeting our goal of being a five-star contractor and reinventing contractor service meant focusing on every detail of the job. By creating a unique experience with the homeowner, investing in our employees, sourcing the best products, and creating training methods for publishing every review a homeowner made on our independent review services, we started to rise above the rest.
