Is Social Media Really Good For Business?

So I have been dabbling in social media for the last year mostly because industry professionals recommend it, and claim it will increase my rank and visibility on Google. Maybe that is not the greatest reason or motivation, but it was the initial push for us. I quickly set up all the necessary social media accounts, and was ready to get to work. Turns out being “social” in this context was very difficult for me.

I would sit, starring at Twitter for 30 minutes stressing about what I should tweet. What do I say on twitter, LinkedIn or facebook, and what the heck do I film and put on YouTube! This was not nearly as easy as I thought. What started out as a seemingly simple task became an overwhelming full-time job. So instead of going full steam ahead with it I just tinkered and never made any real progress. I put this area of our marketing off until recently.

For two weeks now I have been working mostly on facebook and struggling with the difference between a personal page and a business page. (when did everything change?) Thankfully after many hours and a short tutorial from DBS Remodel’s social media expert Alex, it is all sorted out. I am actually having fun with it, and coming up with content is becoming easier each day. I recently chatted privately with the owner of Just Exteriors, went from 7 “Likes” to over 80, and people are actually commenting on my posts. Great progress for such a short effort. As I get more versed in this, I am hoping that it turns into more meaningful relationships with other businesses, clients and future clients. The deep down secret hope is that it turns into actual trackable revenue.

So now that I have jumped in and am participating it is just a matter of time to see if social media is really good for business (or at least our business). Check out our social media efforts so far and let me know what you think!
